Escape to the Washington State Islands: Bald Eagles, Beaches & Bliss

Just off Washington’s coast lies a collection of islands where time slows down and nature takes center stage. From the whale-rich waters of the San Juans to the quiet charm of Whidbey and Bainbridge, these islands offer a peaceful escape filled with scenic views, local flavor, and coastal adventures.

This summer, we were happy to be invited by friends to their beautiful beachfront residence on Whidbey Island. Years ago, we had a wonderful visit to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, so we were excited to explore a different island this time—with great company.

Our trip started with a flight into Seattle, followed by the ever-classic battle with Seattle traffic. But once we boarded the ferry, things shifted. There’s something about gliding across water that immediately puts you in a slower, calmer state of mind—and that's exactly what Whidbey delivered.

Whidbey Island is the largest island in Washington State, stretching about 37 miles and home to Oak Harbor and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. From the moment we arrived, cool coastal temperatures were a refreshing change from the scorching Arizona heat. The island welcomed us with amazing sunsets, bald eagles soaring in the sky, and scenic beaches. Every evening felt like a postcard.

One of the best parts? Roasting s’mores on the beach, wrapped in blankets, with the sound of the waves and a sky full of stars. Kayaking, paddle-boarding, crabbing, beach-combing, hiking, pickleball—there are plenty of activities to help chillax.

Dining was also a highlight of the trip. We grabbed fresh seafood at Saltwater Fish House & Oyster Bar —casual, local, and absolutely delicious. We also treated ourselves to a memorable lunch at Prima Bistro, a cozy upstairs bistro with French-inspired dishes and a fantastic view.

No weekend escape is complete without a little wine tasting, and Ott & Hunter Winery did not disappoint. Their selection was full of variety and sipping local wine with a view of the water felt like pure luxury. The host was a gentleman by the name of "Joe" and he shared how he had worked at the winery for decades. It showed in his knowledge and hospitality.

We loved the Whidbey Island Fair that I discovered on the Whidbey Island Events Calendar. The fair was the perfect size and offered rides, live music, a variety of food vendors, plus livestock shows and craft exhibits.

There is plenty of shopping in quaint local shops that offer a variety of gifts, boutique clothing, and souvenirs. Luckily—or unluckily, I only had a carry-on, so my credit card got a break this time!

For me, nature was the best part. Deer, bald eagles, oysters, mussels, and crabs, jumping pink salmon that run in July, beautiful pines, and lavender and dahlias everywhere. They can grow just about everything on the island, judging by the farmer's markets.

In short: Whidbey Island is magic. Just a ferry ride from the city, but it feels like a world away. It's the kind of place where you unplug, slow down, and take it all in — sunsets, wildlife, cool breezes, good food, and even better company.

If you're looking for a peaceful retreat from the summer heat or just from everyday noise, put Whidbey on your list. You won’t regret it.
