My Eleven-day Adventure Through Vietnam with G Adventures

Image
This year, I had the opportunity to embark on an 11-day journey through Vietnam with G Adventures on a small group tour, part of their newer "Geluxe" product collection—and it was nothing short of extraordinary. From the bustling streets of Hanoi in the north, to the serene waters of Ha Long Bay, the lush landscapes of Pu Luong, and the vibrant city life of Ho Chi Minh City in the south, this trip was a perfect mix of adventure, culture, history, and relaxation. Hanoi: An Energetic Start Our journey began in Hanoi, where I met the 11 other travelers in our group—two from Canada, three from England, two from Ireland, and the rest from the U.S. The diverse mix of people made for fantastic conversations and new friendships. Hanoi offered an exciting introduction to Vietnam’s rich history and lively street culture. Some of the highlights included: Riding on the back of motorbikes, weaving through the chaotic traffic. Visiting the infamous Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the “Hanoi ...

Savvy Traveler Tip: How to Maximize Currency Conversions and Minimize Fees

Image
When I travel internationally, I literally never buy foreign currency at home before my trip as I find the exchange rates typically aren't great and I don't want to pay the bank fees. Instead, I wait until I arrive at my destination and withdraw cash from a local ATM. Let me add, these are not the airport ATMs and currency exchange counters, which typically offer poor conversion rates. While this approach may not feel comfortable for everyone, the truth is that at some point, you’ll likely need local currency while abroad. With a little planning, you can make sure you’re getting the best exchange rates and paying the lowest possible fees.  The Reality of ATM Fees Abroad ATMs are the most convenient way to get local currency, but they’re rarely free when you’re outside your home country. Here are the typical charges: International Transaction Fee: Often a percentage of the amount withdrawn. ATM Usage Fee: A flat charge per withdrawal at foreign ATMs. ATM Operator Fee: Extra char...

Escape to the Washington State Islands: Bald Eagles, Beaches & Bliss

Image
Just off Washington’s coast lies a collection of islands where time slows down and nature takes center stage. From the whale-rich waters of the San Juans to the quiet charm of Whidbey and Bainbridge, these islands offer a peaceful escape filled with scenic views, local flavor, and coastal adventures. This summer, we were happy to be invited by friends to their beautiful beachfront residence on Whidbey Island. Years ago, we had a wonderful visit to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, so we were excited to explore a different island this time—with great company. Our trip started with a flight into Seattle, followed by the ever-classic battle with Seattle traffic. But once we boarded the ferry, things shifted. There’s something about gliding across water that immediately puts you in a slower, calmer state of mind—and that's exactly what Whidbey delivered. Whidbey Island is the largest island in Washington State, stretching about 37 miles and home to Oak Harbor and Naval Air Station Whid...

Savvy Traveler Tip: Who’s Taking Care of Fido While Traveling? Conundrum Solved!

Image
Last summer, I faced a dilemma—I wanted to extend a trip in Europe to escape the Arizona heat for an extra week without the steep price tag of boarding my dog and paying for lodging. I’m lucky to have a wonderful neighborhood pet caretaker, but asking them to care for my pup and stay at my house that long felt like too big of an ask. Enter Pet Sitting! I’d heard about a couple who spent three weeks living in Wales for free in exchange for watching someone’s pets. It sounded too good to be true—but it turns out, it’s absolutely a thing. Where to Start? There are several reputable pet-sitting platforms out there that connect pet owners with travelers who are happy to exchange pet care for free accommodations . I came across a blog that compared the various services and found it super helpful in choosing the one that was right for me. I ultimately went with TrustedHousesitters.com , a platform known for its thorough background checks and professional approach. They do charge an annual fee...

Where the Adriatic Sparkles: Croatia’s Enduring Allure

Image
Last summer, I had the pleasure of visiting Croatia, a stunning Mediterranean gem that has rightfully earned its spot as one of the most sought-after travel destinations. With breathtaking landscapes, historic cities, amazing food, and crystal-clear seas, it's easy to see why so many are flocking to this beautiful country. The Journey Begins… Split: Ancient History Meets Mediterranean Charm Our first stop was Split, known for its ancient roots and lively Mediterranean ambiance. The heart of Split is the impressive Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through the palace grounds, you’re surrounded by Roman architecture mixed with vibrant markets, bustling cafes, and local shops filled  with beautiful red coral jewelry, lavender products, and interesting local wines . The city itself feels like a gateway to the Dalmatian islands, where promenades and pristine beaches set the stage for a relaxing yet energetic experience. Sailing the Adriatic For eight unforgettab...

Savvy Traveler Tip: Unplanned Moments Happen: How Travel Insurance Saves the Day!

Image
Travel insurance is an essential part of planning any trip, whether you're heading to a bustling city or a remote destination. There are many reasons travelers secure travel insurance, and it’s worth considering what’s most important for your needs. Here are a few scenarios to think about: Remote Destinations: If your travel plans take you to areas far from major medical facilities or transportation hubs, insurance can be a lifeline. Family Considerations: Travelers with older parents or family members might need to cancel a trip unexpectedly or return home early. Non-Refundable Costs: Whether it’s a cruise, a flight, or a package deal, non-refundable bookings are a significant financial commitment. Personally, I’ve encountered all these situations. With parents in their 80s, I’ve had to plan for the possibility of canceling or cutting a trip short.  Then there was my friend who went hiking Mont Blanc in France last August and wiped out on the first day. That photo is actually h...

Escape to Colorado: A Perfect Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

Image
I recently had the pleasure of spending time in beautiful Colorado - a state that offers a perfect mix of outdoor adventure and serene relaxation. My husband and I have always wanted to attend a concert at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, known for its natural acoustics and breathtaking views. So we decided to turn this long-held dream into a summer getaway while also exploring the surrounding area of Beaver Creek, Colorado, a destination that promises cooler temperatures and an even cooler vibe.  During the summer, this area has a constant schedule of events – concerts, performances, art shows, bike races, and farmer’s markets to name a few. There literally is something for everyone! Our stay at the charming Poste Montane Lodge was nothing short of delightful. Nestled in the heart of Beaver Creek Village, this quaint, historic lodge exudes the warmth and hospitality of a traditional European inn. The convenience of having everything at our doorstep, from gourmet dining to bouti...

Savvy Traveler Tip: Gearing Up for Your Next Adventure

Image
Are you ready for your next big adventure but lacking essential gear? I've been there too. From hiking the ancient trails of Machu Picchu to exploring the frozen landscapes of Iceland, having the right equipment can make or break your trip. And who doesn't love a bargain, especially if you don't plan to use the gear often? On my Machu Picchu hike, I wanted pants with zip-off legs that converted to shorts to adjust to the changing temps. In Iceland, water and windproof snow pants and travel towels for the thermal hot springs were on the list. While traveling through Europe, I needed a secure, anti-theft cross-body bag to guard against pickpockets. Let me say that although I wish I got paid to promote these products, I do not. These are just two of my favorite go-to sites for gearing up: 1 . Travelon Travelon products are awesome! Based in Chicago, Travelon sells cleverly designed luggage, totes, wallets, purses, carry-ons, and many more travel accessories. Not only are Tr...
